A WINTER POTLUCK GET TOGETHER PARTY

We hope you are having a good winter.  This time of year you might want to host a party with your friends just as a casual get together.  Whether it is to watch the Super Bowl or one of the award shows that might be on television.  It could be just a weekend party but you don’t want to do much cooking.  You could host a potluck party where each of your friends could bring one dish and you serve an entree.  Maybe you can make the side dishes  We have some suggestions of what you could serve.

Here is a recipe from Delish and Judy Kim from The Judy Lab, Sweet 'N Sour Cauliflower Recipe.  We like this because it makes cauliflower tastes great.

Fuller House and Homemade Holiday Presents

Fuller House and Homemade Holiday Presents

On December 9th the second season of Fuller House will start streaming on Netflix.  If you are a fan of the sitcom Full House, you will like this show.  It is a spin off of that show.   In this show DJ Tanner-Fuller (Candace Cameron-Bure) is a widower who moves back to her family home to raise her 3 sons. Her sister Stephanie Tanner (Jodie Sweetin) moves back home to help her raise DJ’s children. DJ’s best friend Kimmy  Gibbler (Andrea Barber) and her daughter Romana also moves into the house.

Here is how you can watch season 2 on Netflix.

The whole series of Full House is now out on DVD.

If you would like to catch up on season 1 of Fuller House, you can watch it on DVD.

If you are looking for any holiday presents to give your family and friends either of these, DVDs would be great presents for any of who is a fan of these shows.  If you have someone, who loves movies you can also give them a subscription to Netflix.

Another idea would be a present you make yourself.  If you have anyone, who likes to bake then give them what we call a cookie in a jar.  You fill up a jar with all the dry ingredients for a favorite cookie recipe. Then cover it and put a ribbon.  Don’t forget to also include the recipe.  Tape it to the jar.

You can also give someone all the stuff they need to decorate sugar cookies.  Just get a bag of the sugar cookie mix and the frosting and sprinkles then put them in a basket.  Decorate with a ribbon.  Either of these ideas is easy to put together.

Here is a chocolate chip cookie recipe that you can put in the ingredients in the jar and the best way to put both presents together.  Plus all the products you should need.

INSTRUCTION ON HOW TO PUT COOKIE KIT TOGETHER.
(1.) Combine flour, baking soda and salt in a small bowl.
(2.) Place flour mixture in 1-quart jar.

Welcome to Fall, it’s Apple Picking Season

Welcome to Fall.  If you live in the northern hemisphere it is now autumn. This means the leaves are changing to many beautiful colors. Last blog we suggested that you might want to take a road trip at the end of summer but  if you haven’t had a chance to do that yet then you might want to do it now.  If you have maybe you want to go again. Take a drive and admire all the pretty leaves.  You can also take a drive and go apple picking. This is the perfect season to do that then you can come home and do some baking.

Here are some suggestions for the best orchards according to TripAdvisor:

You can also check Yelp.

This is a list of apple recipes according to Pillsbury.

Want to try and bake an Apple Pie, here is Pillsbury’s recipe.  It is very easy.

We hope you have a great time with whatever you decide to do.

Happy Holidays Cookie Exchange!!!

Happy Holidays to everyone who reads this blog. We hope you are having a good holiday season. Last month we  gave you some advice on the holiday dinner. This month we are going to suggest a good old fashion cookie exchange.  This is a great party to have with your friends for a cold winter day.  You spend time with your friends and bake cookies and exchange recipes. Then you eat what you made while watching some holiday movies.

We have some suggestions for cookies that you can bake. Crisco has the best home made Chocolate Chip Cookies and Sugar Cookies recipes.  Sugar Cookies are fun because you get to decorate them how ever you want them.

Here are the recipes:

If you have someone, who is diabetic here is a great Cranberry Oatmeal Cookies.  We got this recipe from the American Diabetic Association.

If you have some friends, who can’t eat gluten here is a recipe from Betty Crocker for Sugar Cookies.

If you have friends who are Vegans, here is Betty Crocker’s Vegan Sugar Cookie recipe.

If you don’t want to make from scratch but still want to bake that is where Pillsbury Ready Made Cookies come in handy.

If you and your friends aren’t good at baking at all but still want homemade, type cookies, you could always get fresh cookies from your favorite bakery.  It is just as good as if you made them yourself.

What goes better with cookies on a cold winter day is hot chocolate.  To make it a little more special you should just melt some chocolate peppermint candy in it.

http://advicefromroseandlyssamarie.blogspot.com/p/peppermint-hot-chocolate.html

If you have any left over cookies, you should get some Tupperware or Rubbermaid containers for your friends to take some home.  When you store the leftover cookies you should place a slice of white bread in the container.  This helps keeps the cookies from getting hard and stale.  The cookies will absorb moisture from the bread, keeping them soft longer.

The goal is just to have fun with your friends.

Ferris Buller's Day Off

Ferris Buller's Day Off

It was 30 years ago on, June 5, 1985, that High School Senior Ferris Bueller took the day off from school.  This movie was released in one year later.  Ferris Bueller'sDay Off was not only written and produced by John Hughes but he also directed this 1986 comedy blockbuster.  The movie is about how  Ferris Bueller (MatthewBroderick) cons his parents (Cindy Pickett and Lyman Ward) into thinking he is so sick that they let him take the day off from school. We follow along and actually see what he actual does on his day off.  His sister Jeanie (Jennifer Grey) knows that Ferris is lying but can't prove it. The principal of the school Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones) is also after Ferris and want to catch him in his lie. This movie also stars Alan Ruck as Ferris' hypochondriac and depressed best friend Cameron who along with Ferris's girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara) goes along for the adventure.  We should also mention Ben Stein as the teacher taking attendance.

The other thing in this movie that is famous is that you see some of the iconic Chicago landmarks. Parts of this movie was also filmed in Los Angeles.

Here is a list of the locations in this movie:

One of the most famous scenes from this movie takes place during the Von Steuben Parade.  Ferris sings  Wayne Newton's "Danke Schoen" then The Beatles' "Twist and Shout."

Want to know a little more about the movie click here.
What would go great with this movie is a Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza.  You can get one delivered.  What is your favorite restaurant to get pizza?  If you want you can make one at home. Here's how.
Tell us what you like most about this movie? What do you do on your day off?

Holiday Movies, Cookies and Hot Cocoa

Here we are in December and it is holiday time.  For the people of the Jewish faith this week they are celebrating Chanukah. That is the festival of lights and lasts for 8 days.  Next week people of the Christian faith will be celebrating Christmas.  That holiday remembers the day Jesus was born.  Then before you know it the New Year is here.  In this hectic time we think you should take a few hours to yourself and curl up on the couch, watch some holiday movies and have cookies and cocoa.  This could help you relax.

It wouldn't be the holiday season if you didn't watch at least one holiday movie and why not a classic movie.  We have chosen "Miracle on 34th Street" but the 1994 version. "Miracle on 34th Street" is a time honored holiday movie watching tradition at this time of year. The 1994 version is the second remake of the original 1947 movie. That movie starred Maureen O'Hara and Natalie Wood.  The first remake was for TV in 1973.  That star David Hartman, Jane Alexander and Sebastian Cabot.  USA Network sometimes still airs that version.

In the 1994 version of the movie you will notice that Macy’s and Gimbels are no longer the stores that are mentioned, the reason for this is because Macy’s wouldn’t grant permission to use their name and Gimbles went out of business in the 80's. It stars Richard Attenborough as Kris Kringle, Elizabeth Perkins as Dorie Walker, Dylan McDermott as Bryan Bedford and Mara Wilson as Susan Walker. This movie is about and we are quoting a line from the original 1947 movie when Fred Gailey who was Kris lawyer in that movie says, “Faith is believing when common sense tells you not to. Don't you see? It's not just Kris that's on trial, it's everything he stands for. It's kindness and joy and love and all the other intangibles.”  Faith is something science can't prove. Sometimes you just have to go with your gut feeling.  This movie will at most will give you a good feeling. If you want to know more follow this link.

The best snack for this movie is good old fashioned cookies and hot cocoa.  Here are some suggestions for that.

Now sit back and enjoy some holiday entertainment and we will be bringing you an extra blog this month for New Years Eve.

Movie Night

First blog will be a movie night at home.  Invite a few of your friends to your house for dinner and a movie. We figured that most of the country is so tired of the horrible weather we have been having and it may be hard to actually go to the movie theater, why not host a movie night at home. To keep you and your guests warm serve good old fashion comfort food.

We think the perfect comfort food to serve at your movie night is a stew of your choice.  We should tell you that Rose is a vegetarian and Lyssa Marie is not.  The polite thing to do when you are having a party is have food choices so everyone can have something to eat and enjoy.  You don’t have to serve meatless options but you may even have friends and family that can’t eat certain foods for health reasons so why not be a good hostess and have food so that every guest is happy and well fed. Again, these are just mear suggestions and you don’t have to follow them. Please, we do not want to hear how Rose should eat meat because she will never tell you not to eat meat that is a person's choice.

You can make 2 types of stew and it is easy.  We think the easiest thing to make is stew because it is basically a drop everything in a pot recipe. By that we mean you drop everything in one pot and let it cook all day. Easy? Right?  You might say it is hard because some of the veggies need peeling and chopping, well, that can be true, but, these days with more ready to use packaging it makes it easier. Stew also makes the house smell good. Stew is a great comfort food for a winter movie night.  Some biscuits are great for dipping in any leftover sauce. Even easier to make. You open the package and put on a baking pan and put it in the oven.

Since it is a movie night you will need snacks.  You should get a mixed veggie platter.  They sell them at any grocery store all ready cut up with a dip.  You should also have chips and pretzels.  Don’t forget the popcorn. If you have an air popper you can have an endless supply.

After the movie you can have dessert.  We will suggest a Parfait, again very easy.  What it consist of is, pound cake cut in cubes and whipped cream layered in a glass.  If you have friends who are watching their weight why not just serve fruit.

There you have it your simple movie night with comfort food.
The movies we chose for this blog are romantic movies that anyone can enjoy.  The theme of both movies is about knowing who you want to spend the rest of your life with and how to keep them in your life. These movies complement each other.  You can watch just one or have a double feature.

We chose You’ve Got Mail. This movie is a modern day remake of the movies "The Shop Around the Corner" (1940) starring Jimmy Stewart and Maureen O'Sullivan  and "In the Good Old Summertime" 1949 starring Judy Garland and Van Johnson.

Meg Ryan plays the role of Kathleen Kelly. Tom Hanks plays the role of Joe Fox. You've Got Mail is the story of two New Yorkers who have an anonymous romance online.  What they don't know that in fact in real life they are in rivals.  Both Kathleen and Joe own competing bookstores. Joe's bookstore is a chain store while Kathleen owns a smaller store that Joe eventually puts out of business.  What they also don't know is each are involved with other people.

We watch as their love blossoms and if they can put their rivalry behind them.  For a synopsis of the movie look at the page on the side of this blog.

http://advicefromroseandlyssamarie.blogspot.com/p/youve-got-mail.html

The other movie is The Vow. This movie is a movie inspired by the real life story of the couple Kim and Krickitt Carpenter.  The movie stars Channing Tatum & Rachel McAdams as Leo and Paige a couple madly in love but because of a bad car accident  Paige loses her memory and doesn’t remember she ever was married or in love with him.

Leo described this “moments of impacts.” His theory is that, these moments of impact, these flashes of high intensity that completely turn our lives upside down actually end up defining who we are.”

This movie follows as Paige tries to regain her memory and the couple falling back in love.. For a synopsis of the movie look at the page on the side of this blog.
