Beetlejuice is a Tim Burton movie, which is a good movie to watch around Halloween because it is a goofy scary movie that shouldn't give you nightmares.
This movie is about Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin) and Barbara Maitland (Geena Davis). They are on vacation. The movie opens with Adam playing with a spider which is in his model house. Meanwhile downstairs Barbara is cooking when the neighbor Jane Butterfield (Annie McEnroe) comes to their door. Jane wants them to sell the house saying that it is too big for them to live in since they do not have children. Barbara keeps telling her no that they want to keep the house. She basically pushes Jane out the door and goes back to cooking. Jane then goes to Adam and tells him about the offer she received for the house and tells him they should sell. He also tells her no. He goes downstairs to Barbara and tells her they need to go to the hardware store to pick something up.
They get in the car and Barbara drives them to town. As they are driving they are stopped by a dog running in the middle of the street. They stop just in time. The get to the hardware store and pick up what they need. Outside is the Barber Old Bill (Hugo Stanger) who asks Adam if he wants a haircut. Adam says no. He gets back in the car and they go home. On the way home the dog again gets in their way. This time they swerve on the bridge and crash. The dog is on a piece of wood that could save them if the dog would stay on it but it doesn’t. Adam and Barbara go into the river and the car goes upside down.
Hours later at their house the fireplace suddenly starts. Adam and Barbara walk into the room soaking wet. They try to dry themselves at the fire. She puts her hands up and the flames go higher and her fingertips catch on fire but doesn't burn her. The realize something strange is going on. Adam says he doesn't remember getting out of the car or how they got to the house so he goes to investigate but something appears to outside him but for a short second. He walks back in and Barbara tells him he was gone for 2 hours. This shocks him. She tells him that something wrong is going on. She walks him over to the mirror and picks up the wooden horse. She shows him that only the horse appears in the mirror. Then he spots a book on the table that title is, “Handbook for the Recently Deceased.” He picks it up to read it. They now realized they are dead.
The next day they hear Jane and her daughter drive up. They are crying and dressed in black. They try to get her attention but can’t. As Jane pulls away we see a “For Sale” sign on the house.
A few days later, Adam and Barbara hear strangers entering their house. The Deetz have bought the house. Delia Deetz (Catherine O'Hara) and her decorator Otho (Glenn Shadix) are already decided how they will change the house. They go room by room. Charlie Deetz (Jeffrey Jones) isn't very happy with this. He tells them they can't touch his den. This doesn't make Adam and Barbara happy and want to stop them. They decide to be ghosts but no one can see them. The daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder) isn't happy with anything especially living in the house
The movers arrive and are mishandling everything. Delia is yelling at the moving men when they are moving one of her sculptures. Lydia is taking photos. She spots something strange in the attic. Jane comes by with the key to the attic that Adam had locked. Jane gives the key to Lydia.
Lydia goes up to the attic to try the key in the locked door. Adam and Barbara hear her and go to the door and hold it shut so she can’t open it. Just then the TV turns on it is a commercial for Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton). He tells them if he needs help getting rid of the live people he does exorcisms. He says if they say his name 3 times he will appear. They don't understand and ignore the commercial. Adam knocks the key out of the door and it remains lock. Lydia looks through the key hole. Adam reads the book that they have to see what to do next. It says if they draw a door they can escape. He does and a door appears and there is a glowing green light on the other end. Lydia sees that.
Lydia goes to her to tell her what she saw but he won't listen. She goes back to the attic to try the key and gets in this time. No one is there. Adam and Barbara have gone through their other door. That door leads them to a waiting room on the other side. They find a bunch of strange looking people. They go to the receptionist (Patrice Martinez) to find out where they are. She tells them they don't have an appointment so they will have to wait. When it is their turn they go do this strange hallway with a bunch of weird doors. They through the correct door and find that they are in their own home only it has been redecorated. They also meet their case worker (Sylvia Sydney.) She tells them to read their manual which will tell them how to haunt the house and get rid of the live people. Adam and Barbara ask them about Betelgeuse. She tells them never to call him. Never say his name. That he will only cause more trouble. She also tells them he is living in their cemetery in the model city.
Charlie calls Maxie Dean (Robert Goulet) about the town. That he could make a lot of money. That they could buy the whole town because the town’s citizens don’t know the value of their town. Maxie says he will think of it. Charlie hears a noise at the door. He opens the door to see what he thinks is Lydia but is really Adam and Barbara covered in sheets trying to haunt the house. He tells them that he was on an important phone and not to bother him again. That she will get in trouble for making holes in the expensive sheets. They are frustrated with him and go to haunt Delia but she is sleeping and doesn't wake up. They run into Lydia who takes photos thinking it is her parents but looks at the photos and sees that it is real ghosts. She asks them who they are and if they are creepy looking under the sheets. They take them off to reveal themselves to her and asks why she can see them and no one else can? She says, “I read through the "Handbook for the Recently Deceased." It says that live people ignore the strange and unusual... I, myself, am strange and unusual.” It shocks them that she understood the book. They wonder why that Delia wasn't scared. She tells them that her mom took a pill and is sound asleep. They all go back up to the attic. Lydia admires the town that Adam had built. She asks them why they haven't left the house. They tell her that they can’t leave since their funeral. Lydia now realize that Barbara and Adam really are dead. They tell Lydia to tell her parents that the ghost are mean and scary and will haunt the house so they should move out.
Lydia tries to talk to Delia about the ghosts in the house as Delia is making dinner for her dinner party but she doesn't want to believe her daughter. Barbara and Adam overhear this and try to come up with a plan but can't think of anything. Barbara decides they need to call Beetlejuice. She says his name 3 times and they are transported into the model. They see his cemetery plot. They dig to get him out. They meet him only to find out he is a perverted mess. They decide to not have him help. Barbara says Home 3 times and they are back to the attic.
This is where we will leave off. Go watch the rest of the movie to see what happens.
