We see Peg (Dianne Wiest) who is the Avon Lady going door to door to sell her makeup. She goes to Helen’s house (Conchata Ferrell.) You may know her from the TV show "Two and Half Men." That show is in it’s last season. Helen says no she will not buys any that she never buys any. Then Peg goes to Joyce’s house (Kathy Baker). Joyce is flirting with the Dishwasher Repairman (Steven Brill.) Joyce tells Peg never to bother her when she has company. The next place she goes to a girl’s house and Peg shows her all the makeup and thinks she has a customer but then Kim reminds her she no money to buy any of the makeup.
She leaves Kim’s house frustrated and looks around and sees the house on the hill. She goes there even though it looks scary. She knocks but no one answers so she walks in. She goes upstairs and finds a boy (Johnny Depp) who is shy. Upon closer inspection she sees his hands are just scissors. She asks his name. He says his name is Edward. She sees the cuts on his face and cleans it with some of her cleanser. She decides to take him home.
Peg is driving down the street with him. He gets excited and looks out the window of the car and knocks his head. When they are driving you will notice the kid on the slip and slide. That is Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys. The neighbors see and call one another. Marge (Caroline Aaron) calls Helen to tell her what she saw and ask if Peg was expecting company.
Peg brings Edward to her home. She shows him around and explains who her family is by showing him the photos on the shelf. She gives him clothes to change into. He goes into her daughter’s room and looks around and accidentally punctured her water bed. After Peg is finished talking on the phone with her friends who are curious about her mysterious stranger she helps Edward gets dressed. A crowd gathers outside her home.
At dinner that night, Peg’s son Kevin (Robert Oliveri) and husband Bill (Alan Arkin) ask Edward many questions. Edward is quiet as he tries to eat dinner.
The next day Peg works on the scars on Edward’s face. Outside Bill is trying to do gardening and listen to the game on the radio. Edward helps him and cuts the bushes into a dinosaur bonsai trees. Later he cuts the other bushes the family. Then some evil lady comes into their backyard and tells Edward he is a bad person.
The nosy neighbor invite themselves over for a BBQ so they can meet Edward. They all get a chance to talk to him. The women fawn over him. They feed him the food they brought.
That night Edward is remember him creator The Inventor (Vincent Price). He remembers when he read to Edward.
Late one night, Kim (Winona Ryder) comes home early from her trip. She enters her room and screams when she sees Edward. Edward gets all nervous and punctures her water bed. Bill takes Edward downstairs to show him the pullout couch bed. Meanwhile, Bill gives Edward a drink of alcohol for the first time. Upstairs Peg tells Kim she will be sleeping in her brother’s room that night. Then they go downstairs so Kim can meet Edward. When they do Edward is now drunk and falls down. The next day he is at Joyce’s house creating love birds in her garden. She is making lemonade for him to drink. He thinks it is like the drink he had the night before and throws up when she offers him some.
At dinner that night when Kim’s boyfriend Jim (Anthony Michael Hall) is over for dinner. Bill brings up that Edward should start charging for his gardening services. Edward is cutting the roast beef for the family’s dinner. Bill says that Edward could pay for things if he had the money.
Edward is working at one of the neighbors when he notices that the dog needs a hair cut. He cuts the dogs hair and now all the whole neighborhood wants him to cut their dog fur. Then Joyce has the idea that he should her hair. All the ladies line up. Even Peg has him do her hair.
While helping Edward with his scars. She talks to the head of Avon to get some advice on what else she can do.
Helen take Edward to the knife sharpening store and sees Kim with her boyfriend. Then back at home Kim is having trouble getting in the house. Edward comes along and using one of his tools to let them in.
Edward and Peg to on a tv show. The host of the show (John Davidson) take questions from the audience for Edward. He answers them the best he can. He is interested in the microphone and goes to grab it but gets shocked from it.
