Dr. John Dolittle (Eddie Murphy) is as successful as ever. He is known around the world as the Doctor who can talk to animals and heals them. John is very happy. He helps all sorts of animals from the Tortoises that are having trouble with their sex life to the stray animals that need to find homes. He travels to world to help them all. John even went to Australia to help the Steve Irwin The Crocodile Hunter get a Crocodile but the animal is wise to Steve and tells John he will bite Steve’s arm off if he goes after him. John tries to warn him but Steve doesn't listen.
The only people who aren't happy with his new life is his daughter Charisse (Raven-Symoné). John had come home from his business trip to France and is met by his wife Lisa (Kristen Wilson) and he give her the present he bought her. Then his daughter Maya (Kyla Pratt) comes out to say hi. John gives Maya a Chamaeleon. John asked where Charisse was and Lisa said she was in her room. She also tells him she won’t being around for the family dinner for her 16th birthday. This upsets John. Lisa said that he should page her because she locked in her room with her headphones on listening to music. Lisa says that Charisse has a date for her birthday and that is why she doesn’t want to go with them. John doesn't like this and goes to bang on her bedroom door. She doesn't hear. Lucky (Norm MacDonald) tells him to call her on her cell phone. John said he won't call on that when she is in the house. She should answer the door. John then goes outside on the balcony and bangs on her window. She still doesn't see him. John is met by the drunk monkey (Phil Proctor). John is also met by possum (Isaac Hayes) who tells John his boss sent him to get John. John said he can't come now. The possum said he can’t go back to the boss without John. That he will be killed. John said once again he can’t go and he need to make an appointment. Finally John calls Charisse and yells at her to open the door. She finally sees him and he goes and yells at her. He tells her she is going out with the family. Charisse said she has a date. John said that she can bring him along. She doesn't like the idea of him meeting her family for the first time at the dinner. John said he doesn't care. On the way of her room he notices her report card that has 2 bad grades on it. He takes away her cell phone then walks out of the room.
John goes into his bedroom with her cell phone and looks at all her contacts to see who she has on there. He sees there is a name Biggie Mac. John wants to know who it is so he calls the number. The boy’s father (James Avery) answers the phone shocked that his son had a cell phone. John is mad and gets into a fight with the father. Lisa grabs the phone and apologizes to the man and hangs up.
The doorbell rings and it is Charisse’s date Eric (Lil' Zane). John knows him as the boy who delivers his pizza. As they are sitting at dinner John tells Eric embarrassing stories of Charisse. She is not happy and neither is Lisa. Lisa tries to change the subject by saying that when she is 18 she will be going off to college. John says that she can go to Berkley and live at home to save money. Charisse said she already reserved a U-haul Van for the day she moves out. John is shocked by this. Maya tells him he has a visitor. There is a raccoon (Michael Rapaport) waiting at the window. John goes outside to talk the racoon. The racoon tells him in a “mob like” voice that the Beaver is sick and needs John. John says he will see the beaver in the morning at 8 am at his office. The racoon says the beaver doesn't go anywhere. John says fine he will meet him at 7 am in his car. The racoon agrees to this and says the beaver will like that. Then John comes back inside the house just in time for cake. They all sing to Charisse and as she is blowing out the candles the rats (Reni Santoni and John Leguizamo) jump out of the cake. Everyone is annoyed. John grabs the rats and holds them by their necks and brings the to the window. He tells them what they did wrong but they don't understand. He drops them in the garbage dumpster below much to the rats delight.
Later that night John goes to Charisse’s bedroom. Maya is trying to teach Lucky to talk to her but he can’t. This frustrates Charisse and she tells them to go. John comes to apologize to her. He tells her he is sorry for what has happened. That he is trying to cut back. She says he shouldn't because then more animals will come to the house. He said he had a thought about taking the family away on an European vacation. She liked that idea. He said they will start planning it tomorrow.
John goes with the Racoon (Michael Rapaport) to meet the Beaver (Richard C. Sarafian). The Beaver lives in the forest. The Beaver wants John to talk to the humans and tell them to stop taking away the forest. The beaver takes John to see what is going on. The lumber companies are chopping down the trees. They are taking away the animals home. John calls Lisa to ask what he can do. She suggested he find an endangered breed of animal to save and he could save the forest. He asks her how he can find it. She suggested he goes to Eugene (Andy Richter) at the Zoo. He talks to Eugene who said there is a possibly a bear that needs saving. A bear that needs to return to the wild to mate with a female bear and increase the bear population. While John is talking to him the shy Giraffe (Georgia Engel) is trying to get his attention. The Giraffe says that Eugene’s zipper is down. Eugene is now embarrassed.
When John gets home he apologizes to Charisse for not going on the European vacation. While Charisse isn't happy she understands. Lisa asks him who will try the case. John then looks at her. At first she says no but he talks her into it.
At court Lisa is stating her case to the Judge (Victor Raider-Wexler). Then the opposing counsel Riley (Kevin Pollock) says you can't put a captive bear in the wild. It won’t survive. Maya stands up in court and says that you can if her Dad talks to it. The Judge asks who her Dad is. She says he is Dr. Dolittle. The Judge agrees to let him talk to the bear and try to release it and not have the wood company cut down that grove of trees. The Judge warns that if the bear gets near the humans he will change his mind. This gives Riley an idea. On the way out of court the media asks John all sorts of questions.
John goes the circus to meet and talk to Archie the Bear (Steve Zahn - voice) (Tank the Bear). He sees the show and then sits down with him after and shows him photos of other bears. John tries to explain to Archie why he needs to go back to the wild. Archie doesn't understand and thinks he needs to stay in show business and thinks it is all a joke. John explains that his species is almost extinct and the he needs to go meet a nice girl and make more baby bears. Archie still is clueless.
Mr. Potter from the logging company (Jeffrey Jones) is watching the news about the forest. The newscaster (Shaun Robinson) tells what is going on with Archie. Mr. Potter isn't happy. He tells the Governor (Lawrence Pressman) and Riley that this isn't good for the company. They promise that he will be able to cut down the trees.
The Dolittles arrive at their vacation home in the forest. John tells the other animals that Archie is coming to live in the forest and save the forest. Archie comes out of his trailer and puts on a show for the other animals. They are not enthused at his performance so they all leave to go on with their day and make snide remarks. John takes Archie to go meet Ava (Lisa Kudrow). He talks to Ava about Archie but she is not impressed. She says she is dating another bear. Ava says that she doesn't find Archie interesting because she likes bears who she knows will protect her. John asks her if she can turn Archie into someone she would like would she date him. Ava says yes. John says he will do that in a month.
Time to go watch this movie and see what happens to Archie...
