Ferris Buller's Day Off

FerrisBueller's Day Off was not only written and produced by John Hughes but he also directed this 1986 comedy blockbuster.  This movie is about the popular High School senior Ferris Bueller who wants another day off from school and he cons his parents into thinking he is so sick that they let him stay home. We see what he actual does on his day off.

One spring morning, Katie Bueller (Cindy Pickett) goes in her son Ferris' room and sees that he looks horrible and thinks that is very sick so she calls her husband Tom (Lyman Ward) to come and see.  Ferris Bueller is played by Matthew Broderick.  He is laying in bed pretending to be out of it.  Katie tells Tom that Ferris doesn't have a fever but he says his stomach hurts and he's seeing spots.  Ferris is acting like he is dying.  Katie tells Tom that their son's hands are cold and clammy.  Ferris gets up saying he has a test today and wants to take it so he can get into a good college. His mom stops him and lays him back down.  His sister Jeanie played by Jennifer Grey, walks into the room.  She knows he is fooling and can't believe her parents are falling for his lie.  He pretends that he can't see her and passes out.  He winks at her. Jeanie doesn't understand how her parents don't see the truth.  She says, "that if she was bleeding out the eyeballs they would make her go to school."  She says it is unfair.  Ferris says, "She shouldn't be mad at him and should be grateful because she has her health."  He is also motioning her to keep the truth quiet.  She leaves in a huff and says she wants out of the family.  Ferris starts moaning getting more sympathy from his parents. He tells them he will sleep all day. That he will have an aspirin at noon.  Katie tells him she will be in the area showing houses and if he needs anything to just call her office.  His Dad says he will check on him too.  His Parents leave the room.

Ferris gets out of bed opens the shade to look outside and says how can anyone expect to stay home on a day like today.  That this is his 9th sick day this year.  Next time he will have to cough off a lung.  He explains how you fake illness so your parents will believe you.  He said never fake a fever that for sure will make your mom take you to the doctor's office. He says that is worse than going to school.  He continues to get ready for his day. He takes a shower.  He shapes his hair into a mohawk. Ferris said he did have a test.  He says, "It's on European socialism. I mean, really. What's the point? I'm not European. I don't plan to be European. So, who gives a shit if they're socialists? They could be fascist anarchists and it still wouldn't change the fact that I don't own a car." He take the shower head and starts singing.  "Well shake it up, baby, twist and shout."  He says, "Not that I condone fascism. Or and "isms". "Isms", in my opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an "ism". He should believe in himself. John Lennon said it on his first solo album. I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me. A good point there. After all, he was the Walrus."

Meanwhile at school, the teacher (Ben Stein) is taking attendance.  In this iconic scene in the movie.  He calls out the students names in a monotone voice.  Then he gets to Ferris.  Simone (Kristy Swanson) tells the teacher, "That her brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with a girl who saw Ferris pass‑out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious."  The teacher thanks her and then continues roll call.  He calls out the name Frye.  He is not there either because he is legitimately home sick.  Cut to Ferris calling Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck) telling him that he needs to come pick him up.  Cameron says he can't because he is dying.  Ferris tells him he it's all in his head and he needs to come over then hangs up.  Cameron is in bed feeling sorry for himself.  Ferris is sitting by his pool sipping a drink. He says, "If anybody needs a day off, it's Cameron. He has a lot of things to sort out before he graduates. He can't be wound this tight and go to college. His roommate'll kill him. I've come close myself. But I like him. He's a little easier to take when you know why he's like he is. The boy cannot relax. Pardon by French but Cameron is so tight that if you stuck a lump of coal up his ass, in two weeks you'd have a diamond."

At Ferris' mother Katie Bueller's office she receives a call from Principal Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones).  She apologizes to him for not calling sooner about Ferris being home sick.  This shocks Principal Rooney that she knows he is home.  He goes on to tell her that her son has a terrible attendance record.  That in fact he has been out 9 times.  This  is news to Katie.  The Principal thought she wouldn't know.  As he is looking at his computer at Ferris' record his number of absences goes down.  Rooney starts calling for Grace (Edie McClurg), his secretary, to come in but she is preoccupied and doesn't hear him call her.  Katie goes on to tell him that she can assure him that Ferris is indeed home very sick.  Ferris is at home on his computer hacked into his school record changing the number of days he was out from school.  He says that most kids gets cars he got a computer.

In the Economic class that Ferris is missing, everyone is bored with what the teacher is teaching as well as the monotone of his voice. Ferris is home dancing to the theme of "I Dream of Jeanie." Jeanie who school is walking down the hall when some girl comes up to her and asks about Ferris. She tells Jeanie that she heard if Ferris dies he will donate his eyes to Stevie Wonder.  The girl thinks it is great.  Jeanie is just pissed because she knows her brother isn't sick and conned their parents.  Some freshman call Ferris to see if he is really sick.  Ferris plays some sound effects on his keyboard to make them think that he is.  One of the Freshman says that he hopes Ferris doesn't die because Ferris promised to get him out of summer school.  He tells them to put on another student. They put on some girl who thinks Ferris is dying.  She does say if he is better by the weekend maybe they can do something.

Rooney tells Grace he doesn't trust Ferris.  He says, "What's so dangerous about a character like Ferris Bueller is that he gives the good kids bad ideas. The last thing I need at this point in my career is fifteen hundred Ferris Bueller disciples running around these halls."  Grace tells him that Ferris is very popular.  Rooney tells her he will catch Ferris in the lie.

Ferris calls Cameron to tell him that he is disappointed in him that he is not here. Cameron whines to him that he doesn't care that he is dying. As Ferris is talking to him he gets another call. He uses his fake sick voice to answers.  It is his Dad.  He tells his Dad he is feeling light headed talking to him. His Dad tells him to take a hot bath, put a hot towel around his head then have some soup.  Ferris says okay. He puts his Dad on hold and tells Cameron  if he doesn't come to pick him up, he will have to get a new best friend. Cameron reminds him he has been saying since they were 5.
