The Tony Awards

To us June means it is Tony Awards time.  On June 8, 2014, The Tony Awards will air on CBS and be hosted by Hugh Jackman.  If you are a fan of the theater you should love this award ceremony.  This award show just doesn’t give out awards it celebrates the theater community.  It will show you highlights of the past Broadway season.  This way if you have a chance to go to New York, you can see what shows are available for you to see.

We suggest that if you are going to watch the Tony’s then invite your friends over for a cocktail party.  You can start with hor d'oeuvres as your guests arrive.  Then you could have some salad with balsamic  vinaigrette dressing. Next make shish kabobs for the entree. You can have beef and chicken.  For your vegetarian guests you can either make some with just vegetables or use a veggie meat or veggie chicken substitute.  If some of your guests can’t eat gluten then make sure the marinade you use doesn’t have gluten in it.  Something you make not think of but when you are cooking on the grill make the vegetarian and gluten free ones first.  If you cook it after you cook the beef and chicken then those guests who are vegetarian or gluten free will not be able to eat because their food will no longer be vegetarian or gluten free.  If you don’t cook their first don’t get angry at them for not eating what you prepared.  Always be a good host and make all guest happy. You invited them over knowing what they will and will not eat.

For dessert something upscale sherbert or sorbet and some small cookies. You might think this is too much to prepare but the only thing you will make from scratch is the shish kabobs.  The hor d’oeuvres are frozen or refrigerated and you just pop them in the oven.  You can buy the dessert at your local bakery or supermarket. We try not to make things too difficult for you to prepare.

If you don’t want to watch the award show but still love the theater then you may want to watch a movie that is also a Broadway show.  We have two to suggest you. First is Annie which was originally on Broadway in 1977, it starred Andrea McArdle.  Then it was made into a movie in 1982, that starred Aileen Quinn.  They brought  it back to Broadway in 1997 but it was filled with controversy and only lasted roughly six  months. The next time Annie was revived was for a TV Movie in 1999.  Alicia Morton played Annie in that movie.  In 2012, once again they brought it back to Broadway. This time it starred Lilla Crawford as Annie. Sadly, this didn’t last long on Broadway and closed on January 5, 2014.

Annie is based on the comic strip from the 1920's called Little Orphan Annie. It is about Annie who lives at Miss Hannigan’s orphanage with her other orphan friends.  Annie’s goal in life is to find her real parents who when she was left at the orphanage with a note saying they will come back one day to get her.  Mr. Oliver Warbucks a high power extremely rich businessman is looking to change his image and sends his assistant Miss. Farrell to the orphanage to get an orphan to make him look less mean.  Miss. Farrell brings back Annie.  To find what will happen watch the movie.

The next movie is Bridges of Madison County.  This was made into a musical.  Sadly it only lasted on Broadway a five months but will start touring in the Fall of 2015.  The Broadway show starred Kelli O’Hara as Francesca and Steven Pascale as Robert.  The 1995 movie starred Meryl Strep and Clint Eastwood.  The story is about  Francesca Johnson is an Italian-American housewife who lives in Iowa. A National Geographic photographer, Robert Kincaid, arrives to photograph the covered bridges in the area. Francesca and Robert embark on a brief love affair, shown in the present day and in flashbacks.  To find out more click on this link.
