January is National Soup Month

Welcome to January 2019.  January is National Soup Month, which is great since it is wintertime where we are.  Soup is a great meal to keep you warm on a snowy or rainy day.  We have a recipe for homemade soup that you might like.  It is a vegetable soup that you can customize to your tastes and doesn’t take that long to make.

Each day and or month  of the year has a different celebration or national holiday.  If you want to know what each  day is then you can look at the website National Day Calendar. That website not only tells you what holiday it is but the reason for the holiday and how you can celebrate. For instance National Soup Holiday was founded by Campbell’s in 1986.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS 2018

Happy Holidays!!! This blog is for people who do not have plans for the rest of this holiday season.  We have an idea for you, if for some reason, this year, are you not able to be near your family and friends.  Maybe they no longer live near you, and you can’t afford to fly to them or they can’t come to you.  It could also be sadly, that your family has passed away.  What you can do is find other people who are in the same situation as you and see if they are interested in spending the holidays with you.  You could start a new tradition and make a new friend.  There could be people who you live near or work with who don’t have family and friends nearby.  Find them and see if they are interested in having a party.

Maybe you already know some people who are alone this holiday season and looking for something to do.  There is no shame in being alone and not wanting to anything. Just maybe they are alone because no one ever asked them to a holiday party.  If you ask and they still say no, don’t push yourself on them.  They just want some quiet time.  That is just fine.  You are looking for the people who actually want to have something to do. Do you know any elderly people who family doesn’t live nearby?  Then ask them because they might not like being alone. If you live in an apartment building, then ask your landlord if they know of anyone or if you are allowed to post a flyer. If you live in a house, then you might know your neighbors who are alone. At work if you have a human resources department, you should go to them and ask them if they know of anyone in your place of business, who might be alone and might want some new friend.  Only do this if you are allowed.  Some businesses don’t allow you to associate with people outside of work.

What you should do is host a potluck party.  Potluck parties are easy because you don’t have to do much cooking. You make sure each person brings a different dish to the party.  You can have each person bring one traditional dish that they have with their family. You can cook but you should buy all the beverages. Have at least 4 to 10 people.  Keep it small.  Just make this easy for you.

We just want to wish you Happy Holidays.  Whatever you do we hope you have a good time and come back and share with us what you did.  Just remember, don’t drink and drive we want you all around for 2019.

TIPS FOR HOLIDAY SHOPPING

TIPS FOR HOLIDAY SHOPPING

MAKE A LIST: We suggest you  make a list of everyone you need to buy a present for.  Then you won’t forget anyone.  Even write down what you would like to buy for them.  Then you can figure out how much money you  will need for your holiday shopping.

WHO TO ELIMINATE FROM YOUR LIST: Double check that list.  If you haven’t spoken to or interacted with someone on your list for at least a year or two, then you do not need to get them a present.  You can still send them a card if you want to be nice but you do not owe them a present. You are not as close as you once were.  After five years, then you do not even need to send them a card.

DOWNLOAD SOME OF THE APPS WE SUGGESTED IN OUR APRIL BLOG: This can help you save some money.  Some of the apps even help you make money.  Flip will help you keep track of sales. Ibotta, Checkout 51, Target, and Walmart will help you save money on your gift list and holiday meal. Don’t forget to download your local supermarket apps.  They have coupons and ways to deliver the food to your house.

CHECK THE SHOPPING ADS: You should always check the shopping ads throughout the year, so you know how much items cost.  Just because it’s on sale during the holidays, doesn’t mean it’s cheaper.  You might be able to get some better deals throughout the year.

HOW TO FIGURE OUT WHAT TO GET FOR SOMEONE ON YOUR LIST: If you spend time with this person throughout the year, you should have a clue of what to get them.  Pay close attention to them because they might be giving you hints. If not then look around their house when you are there.  See what they have in their house.  You wouldn't want to give them something they don't need or want. For instance, not everyone likes candles or knickknacks.  No everyone wears perfume or cologne.  In fact they could be allergic to fragrances. If you have been to their home and you never been served Alcohol then don't buy them a bottle of wine for dinner. They may not drink.  Be aware of your friend’s allergies.  Do not buy someone peanuts who is allergic to it.  Don't just buy them a last minute gift from the cheap section of the store. Paying attention to your family and friends is a good thing.  You will get to know them better and know what they could use in their life.

GIFT CARDS ARE A GOOD GIFTS TO GET: In the past, if you bought a gift card people would have thought you were cheap, not anymore.  Gift cards are great for those people you don’t have a clue on what to get them. For those people you can get a MasterCard or Visa.  This way that person can get what they want, either in a store or online. You can get gift cards for almost anything.  If you have someone in your life who has a favorite restaurant then buy them a gift card for that restaurant.  It’s the same with anyone on your list who is a Foodie.  Buy them a card to their favorite grocery store.  If you have children on your list then you can get them ITunes or gift cards for their favorite online game. Someone on your list loves to go shopping to a certain store then get them a gift card for that store.  If someone on your list is always shopping on Amazon then you can buy them a gift card for that. You can buy gift cards at your local grocery store and most stores have deals on the gift cards.

HAVE A FEW EXTRA GIFTS FOR PEOPLE WHO SURPRISE YOU AND GET YOU A GIFT: It never hurts to have a few extra gifts in your house just in case you someone who is not on your gift list gets you a gift.  You never want to be empty handed.  The perfect extra gifts are those box sets you see in the store.  The box sets can be scarves, hats and gloves to a hot chocolate with a mug set.  These are good standby gifts. You can also get the beauty box sets but make sure the person you are giving it to does not have allergies.

WHO DO I NEED TO GIVE A HOLIDAY TIP TO: It depends on your budget. If you don’t have extra money, then you do not have to give anything.  As with your family and friends, anyone else should understand that you can’t give them money this year.  You can send them a special note telling them how much you appreciate what they do for you throughout the year. We will share with you some advice from Emily Post, http://emilypost.com/advice/holiday-tipping-guide/ Just know as society says it is proper to give a tip doesn’t mean you have to.  Only give tips or gift to people who you see on a regular basis. If you only see that person every six months then you do not owe them anything.  You may also want to check with the company that employs the person to see if it is okay to give a holiday tip to. Some companies have strict rules about this.  You wouldn’t want to make anyone feel uncomfortable.

YOU ARE BROKE, WHAT DO YOU DO: If you do not have money to buy anyone anything, then we say you do not owe anyone a gift.  Your true friends and family will understand.  Anyone who gets mad at you should not be in your life.  If you want to get them a gift then make up your own gift cards. You can give your friends and family some of your time. If you like to babysit and have friends who have children, then offer to babysit for them.  Tell them one day they can go out on a date and you will watch the kids.  Anyone who needs helps around the house and you are really good at fixing things, then offer to help them with the small things.  If you are great at cooking, them offer to cook a meal for someone.  Lastly, there is always the person who needs a hug or a shoulder to cry on.  All you need to do is have paper and pen and write up a little booklet of these personalize gift cards.

SENDING HOLIDAY CARDS OR HOLIDAY LETTERS: If you have a big list, then the easiest way to send these out is with labels you make on your computer.  Yes, you can handwrite all the addresses but you know it is quicker.  When you do your holiday letters, then keep it to one page.  If you, your family and friends  are on social media, then they know what has been going on in your life.  Just keep the letters to the highlights.

HOLIDAY MEAL: If you are hosting a holiday meal or party, then you need to make another list, so you do not forget anything.  In fact you should make two lists.  One of what you want to invite and the other of what you will be serving.  On you invite list keep track of the people who may have allergies or are vegetarians.  If you do not know then ask them.  Every person that you invite should be able to have something to eat.  You should also know that not every vegetarian enjoys Tofurky. You might want to get them Gardein’s Holiday Turkey. Again check with that person before you buy it. Another hint is that any side dish that calls for chicken or beef soup you can substitute vegetable soup so you do not have to make two of the same dishes. As for your guests with a gluten allergy, many products do offer gluten free items.  Just read the ingredients before you buy anything.  If you are still not sure then ask any of your guest before you go shopping what they can and cannot eat.  Now if you do not want to go through all the trouble of cooking yourself, then by all means make it a pot luck party.  If you do, there will be another list because you do not want everyone bringing the same thing.

BACK TO SCHOOL GET TOGETHER

BACK TO SCHOOL GET TOGETHER
This is the time of year that the children go back to school and this year some of you might be in a new school.  If you aren’t in a new school, you are in the next grade so why not get to know the new people in your child’s life. You can host a back to school get together party. Hosting a party is a great way to get to know not only the children in your child’s life but their families.  How many people you invite might depend on the rules of the school.  If your school insists that everyone in the class gets invited to a party then you might want to make your party a potluck party.  A potluck party makes it easier for you.  This way you don’t have to prepare much food for everyone.  If your child’s school doesn’t have that rule then you can have a small party and maybe show a movie. This can also be a pot luck party. It’s up to you.  If you do have a potluck party then make people sign up for different dishes.  This way you don’t have everyone bringing the same thing. No matter what, it is always good to get to know the people in your child’s life.  You should know whom they are spending their days with.  If you have to invite everyone to the party then you should also invite some of the teachers that your children have for the year. It is also a good thing to get to know the teachers away from the classroom. This just brings everyone together and might make for a good school year.

We have some suggestions for food that you can serve at for this party.  First is an easy to make appetizer. “Garlicky Marinated Tomato Crostini” is good for everyone to eat.  If you do have some people who can’t eat bread, then have some of the marinated tomatoes in a bowl so they can eat it without the bread. You can also serve this with some  gluten free crackers.

Our next suggestion is an entree is, “Italian Tomato Chicken with Fettuccini Noodles.”  Again very easy to make and almost everyone can have it.  If you have vegetarian or vegan friends just substitute the Chicken for Gardein’s version of vegetarian chicken.  If you have people who don’t even want to eat that then you can just serve the fettuccine noodles with tomatoes. If you have people who are allergic to tomatoes then have noodles with a garlic butter sauce. This is a simple dish that can be made many different ways.

For entertainment you can have everyone watch a movie.  A good family friendly movie for a back to school get  together would be the movie “Matilda.”  This movie is based on the Roald Dahl book that tells the story of Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson), a gifted girl forced to put up with a horrible parents, a distant father (Danny DeVito) and mother (Rhea Perlman). Even worse, Agatha Trunchbull (Pam Ferris), the evil principal at Matilda's school, is a terrifying, strict bully. However, when Matilda realizes she has the power of telekinesis, she begins to defend her friends from Trunchbull's wrath and fight back against her unkind parents.  If you want, as a party gift, you can buy the book of that this movie is based on and hand it out to the children at your party so they can read it at home.

Whatever you decided we hope you have a good time.  Who knows maybe you will make some more friends of your own.  Just have fun.

A Lazy Day in Summer

Today is National Lazy Day.  Every once in awhile you need to take a day and just do nothing.  Just lay around the house and be lazy.  You shouldn’t even cook that day.  In the morning you can wake up and have cereal with milk and fruit for breakfast.  For lunch you can have a salad.  Then for dinner why not get a pizza or Italian food delivered.  Don’t forget to get snacks for the day too.  You can have the normal junk food snack but also have some fruits and veggie trays so you are not eating junk food all day. Take one day off and just relax.  It is good for people just spend the day doing absolutely nothing.

SUMMER ACTIVITIES: BOWLING AND EATING ICE CREAM

SUMMER ACTIVITIES: BOWLING AND EATING ICE CREAM

We are here in mid summer and the children are out of school.  You might be looking for an activity that the whole family could enjoy and you can keep cool.  How about going to a bowling alley with your family and then go out to eat some ice cream.  Bowling is an activity that you can enjoy anytime of the year.  The reason you should go bowling is because the bowling alley has air conditioning so it will be cool. This is a perfect activity if it is a rainy day too.  The reason this is better than going to see a movie is because in a bowling alley you can talk to your family.  It is always good to have a conversation with your family so you know what is going on in their lives.  This activity takes your children away from their phones and other devices.  You get to spend some quality time as a family.  You don’t have to be that great a bowler to enjoy this activity.  Then after you can go out to an ice cream shop and enjoy a refreshing dessert.  If you want, you can go to one of those ice cream shops that also serves food.  Both activities are great way to keep cool from the summer sun.

We hope you are having a good summer.  What are you doing?  Maybe it is winter where you live because you are in the other hemisphere.  This activity is great for winter too but instead of ice cream then go out for hot chocolate.  Whatever you do we hope you have a fantastic time.

To find a list of bowling alley’s in your area check out the AMF website:

Here is our list of ice cream shops that we enjoy:
